Dry eye is a common complication of LASIK eye surgery, especially among older patients. It is one of the most prevalent eye disorders in the Baby Boom generation, and this will create a need for eye care professionals who specialize in treating this disorder by the year 2030.
Dry eye is a serious condition that in some cases can threaten the health and vision of a patient if steps are not taken early to combat it. Most of the dry eye epidemic can be regarded as a side effect of the aging population in America. Yet LASIK eye surgery is associated with a marked increase in the incidence of dry eyes, with estimates ranging from several thousand to several hundred thousand new cases of dry eyes being added annually from laser eye surgery treatments. The increase in diabetes rates is also a factor, since over half of all diabetics develop dry eye symptoms over time.
